Like so many families, children’s books have always had a special place in our families heart. Some of our family’s favorite traditions include specific children’s books. Being from the New Orleans area, our family is always looking for local children’s books that help give us some small any kind of cultural identity. My children & I recently read “JuJu the Good Voodoo” by Michelle Hirtus.
We let me almost 8 year old son begin our new book adventure that introduced us the character JuJu. Since JuJu is from the Louisiana Bayou, my children were interested to see what local references were used within the book. The book illustration was very welcoming & inviting to my children. Illustrations is done in crayon & ink and instantly allowed JuJu came to Life!
Although the book is about a small voodoo doll (which is apart of New Orleans heritage) JuJu is not like other voodoo dolls. She spreads good deads and is excited to share her good fortune on others. My 12 year old daughter started to imagine what kind of adventures JuJu may go on next. “Will she be in the city or country next Mom?”, she asked. I told her I’m wan’t sure. We will have to wait and see !
Book Summery:
Down in da bayou we find a voodoo doll named JuJu. JuJu is no ordinary doll, she happens to be the one Marie has been looking for. This very special doll comes alive with a “good deeds” spell. This is the first of many adventures to come!
My children & I enjoyed JuJu the Good Voodoo and look forward to seeing what’s going to be in store for JuJu in the next book. She short children’s book kept my children’s attention (even at ages 8 & 12) & was lighthearted and genuine.

My favorite children’s book was Artie the Smartie. It was a book from the 1950’s that was my father’s. I have great memories of him reading it to me and making different voices for all of the characters. Years after my father passed at a very young age from cancer, my grandmother found the book in an old box of things, and wrapped it up for me for Christmas. I was so happy when I opened it, I cried! Now I can share this book with my son the way his “Pop-pop” would have shared it with him if he was still with us!
Thanks for the giveaway!!

My favorite book as a child and I still have this book today as an adult, is a red book entitled Merry-Go-Round. It contains rhymes and short stories. I carried it everywhere with me and so all the people so important to me growing up got to read it to me. It is truly a prized possession and today I read it to my nieces.
