We travel during the holidays especially during the month of November through February so I can’t afford for my family or I to get sick. This month we are going to dedicated Wednesday to wellness with health inspired topics from keeping your skin healthy to workout foods. Join us every Wednesday and do your friends and family a favor by sharing our articles as well.

Today: Vitamins!

3 vitamins you should start taking now and why

You know you should take vitamins, but if you aren’t sure which ones you need to take daily, check out these three vitamins that can make you feel better in just one week with daily use. This simple guide will tell you the vitamin, why you should take it, and how you should take it properly to get the most out of it.

Calcium

Calcium is necessary for strong muscles, bones and teeth. To get the most of it, you need to take it in combination with magnesium (which helps ward off the negative effects of calcium) and vitamin D (to help the body absorb calcium). Take 600 mg of Calcium with 400 mg of magnesium and vitamin 1,000 IU of vitamin D. Be sure to take this with a full glass of water two hours after eating so that your body can absorb it properly and so that you don’t feel sick. Keep in mind that Calcium can block the absorption of other supplements and some prescriptions, so check with your doctor before taking it and be sure to take it apart from the prescribed cocktail.

Vitamin D

As discussed, Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, but it is also vital to the health of your immune system, blood vessels, muscles and nervous systems and it can ward off depression. Many people don’t get enough natural Vitamin D, which is obtained from sunlight. Surprisingly, even though Vitamin D is most found in sunlight, it has shown to help prevent colon, uterine, breast and endometrial cancers. Take this vitamin as described above in the Calcium combination, but be sure to take it with a little milk to help your body better absorb it.

Fish Oil

Most people don’t eat enough fish, which is unfortunate since fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for proper function of the heart and brain. These amazing little oils reduce arterial inflammation and have been associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Take 600 mgs of the DHA omega-3 fatty acid, which is found in most over-the-counter fish oil vitamins. Take it with breakfast to give it time to release into your body and to reduce the taste of the fish oil. Never take it on an empty stomach, as it can lead to fishy tasting burps and make you feel nauseous. Refrigerate fish oil pills to help them last longer.

What kind of vitamins do you take?
