Since my children first started school I have told them everyday to “Work Hard, Be Nice”. I figured if they were hard workers and were nice to others then I covered the basics. When I was little, my mother also covered the basics with me. But to us, life was only about the basics.
Like many before her, she came to this country as a teenager alone and frightened but determine to have a better life than she had in Guatemala. Being poor, uneducated and speaking a different language created roadblocks in her life. But like many Latinos, she crossed those roadblocks by being inspired by others and hard work.
Whether she was cleaning houses or babysitting on the weekends, she gave everything she had into working sometimes 3 jobs a week. The basics were a luxury and my mother worked hard to provide those to us but more importantly she taught us life wasn’t going to give you anything, it was hard work that would one day pay off.
Now that I have children of my own, they see how hard work has inspired my website and my passion for travel. While I worked full-time on my website, I also worked 40+ hours a week in healthcare which provided me the ability to travel internationally several times with my family. Fueled by passion, my work ethic and the inspiration of others, I work hard to achieve my dreams.
Sometimes, I dream about projects falling on my lap or opportunities that come and go with easy, but it’s not in my nature to wait for dreams to come true. Having people in my life like my mother, has inspired me to work hard AND play hard.
The Latino community is very familiar with facing challenges and climbing hurdles in life. This them is evident in Disney’s McFarland, USA. The movie illustrates that champions can come from anywhere. Based on the true story of a 1987 cross country team from predominantly Mexican-American McFarland High School, in McFarland, California, the film stars Kevin Costner as Jim White, the school’s coach.
I won’t spill the beans for you, but I can say that the inspirational movie will not only have you in tears, but inspire you to help others in their quest to find their own passion. I saw the movie with my mother and instantly fell in love! The movie is not just about the team, it’s about a community that was inspired to keep pursuing their dreams in a new country as well. This real story will be available on Blu-ray, Digital HD & Disney Movies starting June 2nd.
