Thank you for joining us for another week of our special series, A Walk In the Park, State Park Spotlight. In this series, we journey to a different state each week to learn about its local state parks. This week we will be visiting the beautiful state parks of Maine. You may not be familiar with these state parks and all they have to offer even if you live here or you may just be looking for someplace new to explore. We invite you to join us in learning about the state parks in each of the 50 states. Now, let’s visit the state parks of Maine.
Lily Bay State Park
13 Myrle’s Way
Greenville, ME 04441
(207) 695-2700
Established in 1961, Lily Bay State Park was created mostly from woodland donated to the State by Scott Paper Company. Boaters and campers enjoy the Moosehead region through warm weather months. October and November is the time for hunters and mid-winter is enjoyed by ice fishermen and snowmobilers. Fishing on Moosehead Lake for salmon and trout is usually best in the weeks after ice out which is usually early to mid-May and then again when the waters cool in September.
The park is truly a nature lover’s paradise. There is so much to do while visiting Lily Bay. Bird watching, camping, boating, fishing, canoeing and swimming- the possibilities seem endless! There are trails for hiking and taking in the beauty of the outdoors. During the Winter there are so many activities including snowmobiling and show shoeing.
There is wildlife to observe all year round and you will be amazed and enchanted to see animals in their natural habitat in the park.

Ferry Beach State Park
95 Bayview Road
Saco, ME 04072
Park season: (207) 283-0067
Memorial Day to Oct. 1
Off season: (207) 624-6080
Ferry Beach State Park is located between Old Orchard Beach and Camp Ellis in Saco. A stand of black gum trees, can be seen in this 100-acre area, which offers a view of miles of white sand beaches between the Saco River and Pine Point.
Before highways were common, beaches gave travelers relatively safe and easy transportation routes. A ferry crossing at nearby Saco River served beach travelers, and that is how Ferry Beach State Park received its name. There is a picnic area, nature trails and a nature center providing guided nature programs in the park.
The warm months are perfect for swimming, laying on the beach, boating, hiking and fishing. Nature lover’s will enjoy the Natural Heritage Hikes. They are narratives that guide hikers through the rich ecological, geological, and cultural elements along 25 of Maine’s most popular hiking trails. These descriptions provide the hiker with all of the information about the natural environments they are walking through. It’s a great way for families to spend time together and learn about this wonderful park and everything it has to offer.

Swan’s Falls Campground
P.O. Box 378
Fryeburg, ME 04037-0378
(207) 935-3395
The Swan’s Falls Campground has tent sites for camping in a pine forest along the Saco River with access to amazing one day and multi-day canoe and kayak explorations. In addition to camping you can spend time fishing, swimming or hiking on the beautiful trails. The campgrounds are more of a bare bones style and great for family camping.
Swan’s Falls Campground is a wonderful park for a getaway with the family. If you love being outdoors and especially out on the water, you will fall in love with Swan’s Falls. Stay for a few days and get your fill of fishing and swimming while enjoying the natural environment that surrounds you. This is a rustic camping experience complete with outhouses! If you enjoy “roughing it” then Swan’s Falls Campground may be the destination for you.
Have you had the chance to visit any of Maine’s State Parks? Which of these state parks sound like one you would love to visit? I would love if you share this post on social media and keep the conversation going.
