A “Gumbo” of Flavors: Winn-Dixie Holiday Recipes To Impress E-book #WDLocalHoliday

WDLocalHoliday Winn-Dixie Local Flavor

To say my family’s recipes are bursting with flavor would be a complete understatement. Since we are local to the New Orleans area & are a Hispanic family as well, our family recipe book would be considered a “gumbo” of flavors. Start off with a thick spicy Creole base, add our Mexican & Guatemalan stock & seasonings, chop up some Cajun Sausage and last but certainly not least, add some rich hearty Mississippi southern poultry (aka Sanderson’s Farm). Stir slowly & simmer to have a complete taste of our favor palette.

As a kid, I remember driving up to my grandmother’s family home near Quitman, Mississippi. A few months prior to the holidays my Grandmother & I would drive to Mississippi with the goal of collecting enough pecans for all of her Christmas desserts & treats she would make for the holidays. We would visit with family first, then go outside and use the pecan gatherer to pick up pecans that had recently dropped onto the grass. I remember doing this for hours, constantly asking if we had enough. There would never been “enough”, not for the way my grandmother baked her treats. Eventually we were done with our task and away to Louisiana we returned. I miss those days with her & I miss her treats & desserts just as much.

But now I make my own pecan pies & pecan holiday treats. The only difference is I’m not heading up to Quitman, Mississippi anymore to gather my pecans. I’m heading to Winn-Dixe instead. Winn-Dixie has a large assortment of ingredients local to my area. I can pick up the pricey pecans elsewhere where they do not specialize in local ingredients, or I can purchase them in Winn-dixie where the prices are affordable since they carry local ingredients like New Orleans Seafood & Plaquemines Parish produce. If I’m looking for Savoie sausage for my Christmas Day Gumbo, I know I can find it in the Winn-Dixie meat section near other nationwide brands. I don’t have to drive over 2 hours for my pecans now & I am still getting the same great local flavor as I am getting at Winn-Dixie. Plus, I’m earning fuel perks so I can save my gas & get a discount on gas when I am ready to head on over to Quitman, Missisippi!

Right now through the Holidays, you can submit your favorite family recipe on the Winn-Dixie Facebook Page. By submitting your favorite family recipe, you have a chance to be featured in the final-Impress E-cookbook hosted by Winn-Dixie. In addition, you can also browse through the already submitted recipes in the gallery to see how others are celebrating local flavor & perhaps make a few of those shared recipes with your own family. I’m always looking for inspiration so I will definitely be checking out the submitted recipes and being creative with my own family throughout the holidays. Who knows, you might find my Crawfish Cornbread recipe in the Holiday Recipe E-book. It’s addicting, wait & see!

Come join me & Winn-Dixie for a Twitter party on December 18, 9 p.m. EST. You can RSVP here: http://twtvite.com/WDLocalHoliday Also, you can use the hashtag: #WDLocalHoliday for more information on Winn-Dixie & the Holiday Recipes to Impress e-book
