Our contributor recently returned from a trip to Alaska. Actually she is still there! After falling in love with the area, she has decided to live in Alaska for the next 2 months. Aside from being very jealous of her, I am so proud that she is starting a new journey in life. Today she is sharing her recent Alaskan experience in a series dedicated to Alaska. Today she is sharing information regarding regional animals found in the area.
The regional animals of Alaska are found both on land and out at in the Gulf of Alaska. Alaska has a large population of land mammals including wolves, Grizzly bears, black bears, moose, caribou, foxes, and sheep. In the ocean, Alaska is home to many types of whales including Humpback, Grey, Blue and the Belugas as well as sea otters, stellar sea lions, and harbor seals. The regional animals of Alaska are impressive and amazing to see out in nature but make sure to have your travel camera ready.

Mooses are one of the largest land mammals to roam in North America. Seeing a moose is on most people’s lists that are visiting Alaska. The males lose their antlers each year and grow back a larger set. If you see a moose with a very large rack then you know he is an older buck. The cows give birth in early June to the cutest little red calves that are fun to see. Moose are all over Anchorage and are found alone many roads, so drive safe!

Grizzly bears are typically only found in Alaska and northern Canada. They love to fish for salmon when they are spawning in the rivers. If there are dandelions blooming along the sides of the highway be prepared to see the big guys out there eating their favorite edible flowers.

Along the Gulf of Alaska, and especially in the Kenai Fjords National Park you can see otters hanging out on their backs in the water. On the rocks close to the shoreline, listen for the honking of the stellar sea lion. Harbor seals on the other hand are stealth and will just pop up out of nowhere without making a sound. Look for them sunbathing on the top of icebergs.

The regional animals of Alaska, Sea Lions are amazing and you can see them in their natural environment all over the state. There is something purely magical and primal about seeing these animals in their natural habitat.
Are you an animal lover? Are you adventurous and would love to visit Alaska one day?

[…] Gear Simple things a lot of people forget is to pack are things like a water bottle, Band-Aids, and ibuprofen. Pack enough vitamins and meds not only for your trip but for a few days extra as well. You never know if you will end up longer on a trip due to unexpected weather or transportation issues. Don’t go on this epic trip and only take photos with your cell phone. Bring a good quality camera with you and an extra memory card. Don’t forget the binoculars or you will have a hard time seeing the Dall Sheep at the top of the mountain. Also, bring a UV filter for your camera and sunglasses will allow you to see the sea life in the water. Don’t forget bug spray! The mosquitoes look like small Alaskan birds! […]
