Exploring Local Breweries in Mississippi - Spotlight Lazy Magnolia Brewery #BayouTravel

While some couples plan a “date night” regularly, my husband and I opt for a date DAY. We find the kids would rather bum around the house during the day and less inclined to tag along if it cuts into their lazy weekend routine. I have teenagers so they are either non-stop on the weekends or become vegetables on the couch come Saturday morning.

Recently my husband & I started our date day by visiting a local brewery in Mississippi. Although I live in Southeast Louisiana, the Mississippi Gulf Coast offers so many attractions at an affordable price, it’s hard to pass up a great deal, plus the scenic drive is totally worth it!

Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company
has been in operation for over 10 years in the Bay St. Louis / Kiln area! I’m glad we visited when we did because the facility has certainly grown over the years. Established in in 2003, Lazy Magnolia is the oldest packaging brewery in Mississippi and offers educational tours for a steal at $10 per sampling adult which includes a Lazy Magnolia pint glass as an added bonus.

Our tour started with friendly and welcoming staff members. The tour took place on a busy Saturday morning. My husband and I anticipated a small tour group until a bus pulled up which gave us over 30 people in our tour. You would think this would be a problem but on the contrary. Ginger our tour guide was a hoot! With another staff member assisting her (I can’t remember her name), they were able to entertain us with funny jokes and witty conversation.

My husband and I have participated in many winery tours so we’re familiar with the tour process. The tour lasted about 45 minutes with information regarding 6 craft beers, history of Lazy Magnolia and touring various aspects of the brewery. We laughed, drank and most important to Ginger: Don’t die! She’s a riot but seriously listen to your tour guide: Safety First!

Over the last decade, the Mississippi Brewery trail has exploded as craft beer has been on the rise. Mississippi is home to nine brewing companies, four of which call Mississippi Gulf Coast home. While we haven’t visited all of the Mississippi breweries just yet, we do plan on visiting the remaining 3 in our area in the near future.

Most tours like Crooked Letter Brewing Company offer tours as low as $5. Like Lazy Magnolia, several breweries are strictly tour only. Mississippi Brewing in Gulfport offers lunch and dinner options which is always a plus.

The beauty of having a brewery in the Mississippi Gulf Coast area is that it’s the perfect location to drink, eat and enjoy the Gulf of Mexico as your back door. Chandeleur Brewing Company is located in a 8,000 sq. ft. historic building, just blocks from the beach in downtown Gulfport, Mississippi. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy a date day than by visiting a local brewery in your area.

Although you must be 21+ years to participate in the craft beer sampling tours, Lazy Magnolia and other brewing companies allow children to tour the facility for free.

Are brewery tours popular in your area? Would you consider a brewery tour as an inexpensive date night option?

Nope, I never really ever got to excited over the taste of beer. I do remember one time that that’s all they had was beer at a party and I got plastered on beer and it was the first and last hangover I ever had from beer and it was horrible…. Nope beer and I do not see eye to eye! Although this stuff does look different… I must say!

I love the idea of a DATE DAY. My kids are both in school for a few hours in the mornings (I have a 2 and 4 year old), so we make a short trip and lunch our date day occasionally! So important to make time for ourselves!
    Looks like a great brewery!

My husband and I do date days, too. All of our kids are grown so we can date day or night. :) Looks like a fun tour. I’ve never toured a brewery before.

I live in Colorado and we have tons of brewery’s here. It is really fun to set up your own tour and go to three or four of them to taste some yummy beers.

I think there’s some breweries in Tampa that do tours. That Southern Pecan sounds so good – definitely want to try it.

It must be cool to blend history with brews for a fun activity that doesn’t cost much. I wouldn’t mind enjoying a tour like the one you feature here.

I have actually never done a Brewery Tour! I have done quite a few winery tours, and even rum factory tours, but not a brewery tour, I need to get on that! Sounds like a fun date idea to me! (although if he sucks I am not sure I would want to be stuck with him for 45 minutes, LOL!!!) :-)

I love going to breweries (and wineries too I must admit). Craft breweries are becoming more and more popular in NYC so I am sure there will be more tour offerings, but at the moment there are only a couple. I have been on brewery tours around the world however and each time I go to a new one, I find the whole process quite fascinating! This would make a great date night activity!

This looks so good! We love enjoying our local craft brews and the festivals they all seem to be having lately. It is a great deal of fun to get out and meet the brewers as well as the other craft beer drinkers in the area – plus there is usually some good music and snacks along with the deal!

My husband John loves to check out breweries!! This looks like a fun one to visit; we always have a blast finding new local crafted beers. I think is a perfect date day trip to make as a couple.

I would definitely consider a brewery tour as a date option! That sounds like so much fun; something I have never considered before. I don’t believe we have brewery tours available in South Florida…

How fun! I’ve never been to brewery but it looks pretty cool! I love your idea of a date “day”! My kids are little but I would totally get a babysitter for a day time date. I love trying different beers so I need to look up a brewery near me.

My husband and I also date during the day. This works for us because it’s so hard to leave the house at night when all the kids are home. Visiting a local brewery sounds like a great idea for a date. My husband would love to try something like this.
