It’s a Party! Winn-Dixie Mardi Gras King Cake Review #WDNola

Having lived in Southeast Louisiana for over 23 years I have had my fair share of Mardi Gras King Cakes. My family & I look forward to Mardi Gras. We love Mardi Gras parades, the Mardi Gras Music, Mardi Gras decor, and of course King Cake. So every year my family & I taste test various King Cakes all over the New Orleans area (and even South Mississippi) in search for a new favorite.

But…..I’m a tad crazy picky.

King Cake Requirements: I want my King Cake fresh. I need my king cake to have the perfect icing to sprinkled sugar ratio. I’m a big fan of filled king cake, but it must not take over the flavor of the cinnamon dough. I stick to the ever so popular strawberry (or raspberry) creme cheese filled king came. But…..please of please don’t have my cinnamon king cake swimming in a strawberry/creme cheese pond.

I thought I had tasted every King Cake sold in grocery stores (and most bakeries) until I found out Winn-Dixie sold King Cakes. So whats a girl to do? I needed to try one out for myself. Winn-Dixie has been celebrating the flavors of Louisiana since 1956 and has created a Winn-Dixie New Orleans Facebook. Through their Facebook & Twitter page I found out about the Winn Dixie King Cake as well as their community events, deals, giveaways and sweepstakes.

Winn Dixie King Cake Mardi Gras

The first thing I noticed when opening the king cake (aside from how affordable they are) is that they are wrapped and sealed. Because they are wrapped & sealed versus using a twist tie (or like some, nothing at all) they will travel well. You can bring the King Cake to the parade route or ship to a family member. No sprinkle sugar mess! Then I noticed the king cake itself looked freshly homemade. Not pulled from a freezer. The cinnamon cake itself had a nice texture and was sweet yet not overpowering. The sugar/icing ratio was on point and was neither swimming in filling or dry as the Sahara. At 10.99 regular retail, I was very impressed. I paid almost double for a King Cake at a competing store and was not happy to see a beautiful king cake that was NOT fresh. I wanted fresh & flavorful and I got both when eating my Winn-Dixie King Cake.

I go to Winn-Dixie once a week to make my weekly budget stretch. Between the fuel perks, weekly specials and Big Easy meal/deal solutions I can stick to a budget without sacrificing flavor or health. Make sure to check this weeks sale circulars because the Winn-Dixie Large King Cake is $8.99 (save $2.00) when using your Winn-Dixie Reward Cards. Also, Winn-Dixie New Orleans Facebook is providing its fans a chance to win 2 tickets to the Super Bowl halftime show. You read that right, check the Facebook page for more information on Big Game events, savings and sweepstakes. Winn-Dixieʼs is also having a local Super Bowl Stock Up Parties, where one lucky shopper could win a pair of tickets to the Big Game. More information is on the the Winn-Dixie New Orleans Facebook page. If you win, don’t forget to bring me!!

Winn-Dixieʼs Grocery Gras are coming up February! So check out http://www.facebook.com/WinnDixieNOLA for information on King Cake, decorating for kids, Capture the Crown contests and other Mardi Gras Family-Friendly events. I’ll see you there on Saturday morning!

I’ve never had King Crab either! We live in New England now, and there are no Winn Dixie’s near us, but it was my favorite supermarket chain when we lived in Florida :)
