Top 8 Micro Pubs to Visit in the U.S

You’ve heard of a brewery and winery but have you heard of a micro pub? Essentially it’s a simple, small establishment that serves only beer – no food. There isn’t a need for a lot of equipment and the focus is on serving good, high quality, small brew beers. In the United States they’re also known as craft breweries and are growing in popularity.

Kettlehouse Brewing Company – Missoula, Montana

Kettlehouse is the definition of a micro pub. Its brewery is small, its serving room tiny, and they don’t serve food. But for locals and visitors alike, it’s a must.

Clipper City Brewing Company – Baltimore, Maryland

After a day on the Inner Harbor of Baltimore a drink at Clipper City is in order. Creative names and labels for their beer, as well as a strong seasonal selection including such drafts as Loose Cannon IPA and Peg Leg Stout.

Brooklyn Brewery – Brooklyn, New York

They say there’s something special about the water in Brooklyn, maybe that’s what makes Brooklyn Brewery beer so good. Can you go wrong with Black Chocolate Stout? The brewery located in Williamsburg has broad appeal from hipsters to Wall Street brokers. Tours are available and a small food menu is available.

French Broad Brewing – Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is home to some of the countries’ best breweries, including French Broad. They focus on creating European style beers that maintain the flavors of the local area. They’re not open late, closing time is 8pm but you can enjoy great local music while sipping on their delicious selection every day of the week.

Allagash Brewing Company – Portland, Maine
Dubbed New England’s premier Belgian-style ale maker, this pub offers a different style beer than most pubs. What started as a single man brewing operation has grown (but not too big) to accommodate demand. Six beers are brewed year round and other seasonal and one off brews are mixed in throughout the seasons.

Boundary Bay Brewing Company- Bellingham, Washington

Just outside Seattle you’ll find Boundary Bay Brewing Company who have been producing craft beers since 1995. With over 70 awards to their name – including best beer in Washington State – you’re sure to know the drinks here are top notch. A separate bistro and taproom mean you can come for dinner, or just come for a drink.

Founders Brewing- Grand Rapids, Michigan
The Midwest is where beer has always had a stronghold in the US, and today small breweries can be found all over the region. Founders features a taproom at their Grand Rapids facility that includes taste tests and a Mug Club membership for repeat visitors.

Live Oak Brewing Company – Austin, Texas

Live Oak brews beer in the style that it is commonly done in Germany and the Czech Republic. It began as the project of two home brewers who wanted to share their love of this style of beer. Their product is available at the brewery and also served in pubs and restaurants in several Texas towns.

Have you experienced a micro pub in your area? Share so we can add it to our travel must see list.

We have a micro pub in our area that my husband loves, but I’m not really a beer drinker, so I don’t know too much about it. My sister raves about Live Oak in Austin though!

I’ve never been to a micro pub before. I know they are becoming popular but I’m just not a fan of most beers, ales, etc that you’d find in one.
