It’s no secret that my “babies” and I are stepping into uncharted waters. My daughter is now a teenager and formal dances have already begun. If you keep up with my on Facebook you may have remembered how I went shopping with my teen in search for a formal dress. we were looking for something age appropriate, colorful and trendy but mostly something she felt comfortable and didn’t stretch our budget.
Since prom dress shopping should be a breeze, last weekend I went to a Macy’s Prom Fashion event with special guest, celebrity Beauty and Fashion Vlogger Lindsey Hughes. My daughter was so excited to attend the event, not only to see the various prom styles available at Macy’s but to meet one of her favorite beauty and fashion YouTube stars at our local mall.
Lakeside Mall and Macy’s have often teamed up to bring celebrities to meet local shoppers and offer fashion and beauty advise that can help make our shopping experiences more enjoyable and purposeful. We have attended several Macy’s event and always feel we bring home tips that we can utilize on our next shopping trip to prepare us for our next big event.
After the fashion show guests were welcomed to meet Lindsey Hughes at Macy’s in the mstylelab department for an exclusive meet and greet and shopping party. If you have a event at your own Macy’s, be sure to come early because only the first 150 customers to arrive to the fashion show were able to enjoy VIP access to meet Lindsey and take a photo with her! PLUS, If your favorite teen has prom shopping left, you could also receive 20% off prom dresses the day of the event.
Lindsey Hughes was such a pleasure to meet. She did a fantastic job hosting the event and gave us insightful tips on how we can take today’s prom dress fashion and make it our own without the pressure of others to wear what is expected.
One of my favorite tips Lindsey offered to the young teens (and their parents) was to be conformable and have fun. I kept telling my own daughter the same piece of advise when we went dress shopping recently.
As you can see from the variety of dressed, color and fit is so vital! My daughter has a very athletic figure and is not petite. Her biggest concerns when dress shopping is length and fit. Aside from the various patterns and styles, you can see that you can pull a glam look without over doing it with jewelry or accessories. The prom dresses themselves are their own statement pieces.
What’s my favorite part of dresses shopping? Staying within our budget! Last month for my daughter’s formal, once we factored in shoes, makeup, hair, and other essentials we were looking at a small fortune. Luckily my daughter stayed within her dress budget so we can make room for the extras she needed that night.
To be completely honest with my readers, I had a budget set aside of $150 for a formal dress. While some may think that is astronomical, others may understand that dresses can be costly. At Macy’s you can find numerous designs for under $100. Once you factor in store sales or Macy’s online coupons you can easily find the perfect dress for under $100. That is music to my ears!
Side note: My daughter’s dress retails for $120 dress. After we received a 40% off store sale and a 15% online coupon, I was ecstatic to find out our dress was well under $75 after taxes. Sweet!!
In addition, Macy’s offered additional fashion and style advise from hair professionals and makeup tips by other Lakeside Mall vendors to all guests. Don’t forget about shoes! In order to dance the night away, you have to have proper footwear. Guests were able to take “Shoefies” while trying on footwear that would make their prom night even more spectacular.
My favorite footwear tip is be comfortable and neutral. If you have a long prom dress, opt for a comfortable shoe since your heels will not be totally visible. My daughter’s heels were barely visible in her formal gown. In fact, I’m so grateful she chose a silver pair of heels. We can easily use them for another event and save time and money for something else.
Check your local May’s for additional events similar to the Prom Fashion event at our local Lakeside Mall. You might find yourself snapping pictures with your favorite celebrity as well.

I love looking at prom dresses. The shorter, flowy dresses are my favorite (and would be so fun for dancing!)

The fashion show was super cute. Thankfully, I have a full decade before I have to consider prom dresses. I hope I can do it for under $100. I’m up for the challenge.
