I know we are all so excited that Black Friday ads have started to be released. Some holiday shoppers want to get the best bargain they can find and Black Friday offers that to them. But are we taking the “Holiday out of Holiday Shopping”? Today Walmart released their Black Friday Ad. Shoppers like myself were happy to start seeing what their dollar can buy and planning accordingly to create their holiday shopping list. But I also saw that Walmart was starting their Holiday Event Thursday, November 22nd at 8pm. That is 2 hours earlier than in 2011.
Starting at 8 p.m. local time on Thanksgiving Walmart will offer deals on video games starting at $10 & home appliances such as a Crock Pot slow cooker (total lifesaver ) and a Mr. Coffee maker for $9.44. each. But also starting at 10p.m Walmart will also guarantee that 3 times will be available. Apple iPad 2 16GB with Wi-Fi, a March 2011 version, priced at $399 with a $75 Walmart Gift Card; a 32-inch Emerson 720p LCD TV at $148, $80 below the usual price; and an LG Blu-ray player for $38 that Walmart. now, I have to admit that I am thinking about getting an Ipad, but that is neither here now there as I am on vacation on Thanksgiving week and I know my family does not want to spend one the last nights of our trip as the local Walmart.
But to play devil’s advocate, are retailers taking away the Holiday in Holiday Shopping? I remember years ago going with my husband’s family to K-Mart after Thanksgiving dinner to see what kind of deal we can gather. Normally, I bought Christmas decorations but over the years some of the years hottest items are at a low prices on Thanksgiving. So it may seem like “I’m thankful for everything I have in my life, but this is what we really need for Christmas!?!” Doesn’t sounds so thankful does it?
Can we do both? Enjoy the Holiday & get our Holiday Shopping on Thanksgiving evening?
How & when will you do your holiday shopping? Will you be out there on Thanksgiving evening-8p.m your local time? Will it affect your Thanksgiving Holiday with the Family?
It gets earlier every year. I remember as a kid the stores would put up the Christmas displays on Thanksgiving. We would go downtown after eating to look at the window displays. It does not seem special any more when Christmas decorations are out in October.
We don’t do a lot of Christmas shopping. Instead we shop the sales afterward and exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day.
I did notice that over the last 3 years or so more and more stores are opting to provide GREATER deals on Thanksgiving. I find that frustrating and I don’t entertain it, nor do I even dabble in Black Friday! I did it once and that was many, many, years ago. I like to get my family gifts that they’ll love, and yes, a great deal is a great deal, but I’m a mom, a frugal shopper and a couponer, I’m going to make them happy on Christmas no matter what is under the tree. I’m going to sit back, enjoy my turkey dinner, watch silly and sentimental holiday movies and enjoy my family.
AWESOME ARTICLE!
My husband has to been in at 10pm Thanksgiving night work until 1am then back at 7am to close…it crummy. I leave town for the weekend to visit family but it pays the bills!
I generally buy stuff throughout the year and Christmas is covered well before Thanksgiving.

I’m with Dawn. I stock up on clearance and Amazon throughout the year and am covered by the time Thanksgiving arrives anyway.
I refuse to compromise my time with family to get to bed early so I can be up for ridiculous sales in the morning. I have felt that way for years and I absolutely refuse to leave my family on Thanksgiving night to go shopping.
That’s fine for some people, but no thank you for me!

I think that the holidays have gotten too commercialized and all about the almighty dollar! Black Friday Shopping has now gone into Thanksgiving Thursday and employees are getting to spend less time with their families
