10 Ways to Stretch Your Decor Budget

Home Decor Budget Tips
It’s fun to decorate your house, but oftentimes, it costs more money than you’d like. If you go to a department store, many times a simple picture frame can cost you $20 or more. This adds up and before you know it, your decor budget is blown and you haven’t even finished one room. There is hope, however. Try stretching your budget by following these simple tricks.

Tip #1

One of the first expenses you have when decorating your home is paint. Whether you plan to just paint one room or the entire house, each can of paint can only be stretched so much. To cut costs on painting, try asking the sales associate at the home improvement store if they have any returned cans of paint. These are usually discounted way lower than retail costs and many times they’ve been returned simply for being a shade lighter or darker.

Tip #2
When you’re at the stores looking for some decorations that will look good in your home, try finding some “damaged” items. Obviously you don’t want totally destroyed items, but many times you can find a beautiful decoration that has only a small flaw. These items are usually discounted and you can’t even tell that there’s anything wrong with them.

Tip #3
Storewide sales are perfect for finding decorations for cheap. If you know you’ll be redoing your home’s decor sometime in the future, plan ahead and start buying your decorations during holiday sales. Most retail stores have some type of sale for holidays like President’s Day, Black Friday, Easter and Memorial Day. Go out during these sales and find items you could see yourself using. Set aside whatever you buy and you’ll already have a stockpile built up for when you start your decor project.

Tip #4
Stretching your decor budget is all about where you shop. Some stores are just plain expensive, so stay away from those and find somewhere you can shop for cheap. Great options for finding items cheap include stores like the Dollar Store. The Dollar Store is great if you’re looking for new items at low prices. Let me tell you, $1 items add up much slower than even items as low as $5.

Tip #5

Don’t limit yourself to home decor that is new. Stop by a local thrift shop or resale store and see if you can find second-hand items in good condition. Even if they’re not in the best of conditions, you can always work on them and make them like new. Even if you’d like to use new decor in an area like the living room, you can always use the second-hand decor in bedrooms or guest rooms. This allows you to use more of your budget towards decor you really want.

Tip #6
Coupons can really help cut the cost of your decor project. Major retail stores can usually afford to hand out 20% off coupons on a regular basis. Whenever you see these deals or come across a coupon, snatch it up and hit the stores. Any amount of money you save on your decorations is a way to stretch the budget a little further.

Tip #7
There are also ways at home you can save on your decor budget. One way is to make decorations yourself. All you have to do is go online and look up DIY home decor projects and you’re bombarded with tons of ideas to try. Usually it’s much cheaper to buy the supplies to make the items yourself rather than just buying the finished product at a retail store.

Tip #8
The best way you can save money while decorating your home is to use what you already have. If you have an old chair that you don’t like, reupholster it so it matches your tastes. You’ve just saved yourself hundreds of dollars for an easy fix. Any other items you have around the house can easily be re-purposed. If you’re not sure what to do with an item, find possible upcycling projects online.

Tip #9

If it’s possible, learn how to sew so you can save on such items as curtains or upholstering furniture. Fabric is cheap to buy, especially if you can find it on sale or have a coupon, and you can create a personalized look in your home for less. There are many different sewing projects you can use to make your home look fabulous without breaking the bank.

Tip #10
Finally, although cheap is nice, free is always better. If possible, ask your family members or friends if they have any decor items they’d like to get rid of. Many times, they’ll have things in storage they don’t use anymore and it’s the perfect opportunity for you to bring something “new” into your home without the new price tag.
