If you live in the Great Lakes area or are just planning to visit, you may be looking for attractions to visit with the family. There are plenty of great attractions that are family friendly, it all depends upon what you’re interested in. Check out these fun choices.
Located in Lake Huron, Mackinac Island offers plenty for families to do. For nature and history, you can visit the Mackinac Island State Park — a site that encompasses 80 percent of the island, and includes Fort Mackinac. While you can’t camp on the island, you can stay in a bed and breakfast while you explore. The island doesn’t allow motorized transport except for emergency and service vehicles and snowmobiles during the winter months, so you will have to make use of your feet, a bicycle, horses, or a horse-drawn carriage to get around. There are plenty of shops and restaurants to check out as you enjoy a laid back visit on this island.
Sandusky, Ohio is the spot to visit if you’re after fun and excitement in the Great Lakes region. Located on a peninsula jutting out into Lake Erie, Cedar Point boasts 364-acres of theme park that features more than 70 rides including more than a dozen roller coasters. Cedar Point features four spectacular roller coasters that are well over 200 feet. Cedar Point first opened in the late 1800s, so if you’re looking for history in addition to family fun, this is your stop!
Chicago may not be your first thought for family attractions around the Great Lakes area, but if you visit the Navy Pier, you won’t be disappointed. This 3,300-foot-long pier reaches out into Lake Michigan on the north side of Chicago and features sight seeing tours, fairs and festivals, the Chicago Children’s Museum, and Pier Park as well as plenty of other attractions. Pier Park includes a Ferris wheel, miniature golf, and a number of other rides that are reminiscent of times past.
Perhaps the most well known attraction around the Great Lakes region is Niagara Falls. While Niagara Falls might bring to mind the idea of a honeymoon, it is actually a great attraction for families to enjoy as well. As if seeing the waterfalls at Niagara Falls isn’t enough of an attraction, there are other things to see and do. If you want to get a closer look at the waterworks, hop on a Maid of the Mist boat tour to get up close and personal. If you want a little more nature that is a little less wet, check out the Aquarium of Niagara, the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory or MarineLand theme park. For a bit of history, visit the Old Fort Niagara and learn about the past.
