During the winter, we layer on clothing to keep our temperatures up. When the summer arrives, we want to shed it and come out of hibernation. Finding summer clothes is always fun but be sure to find clothing that will help keep you cool in the heat. Here are some ideas to help you fashion your summer wardrobe.
Summer Wardrobe Considerations
The highlight of summer months is spending time outside. The downside to this is the fact that the rays from the sun can raise our internal temperatures to unsafe levels. One way that you can temper this is to dress appropriately when you are outside.
Your clothing can do many things:
* Remove excess moisture from your skin
* Keep air circulating between your clothing and skin
* Deflect the rays of the sun
* Help you look good without showing signs of sweating through your clothes
Tips for Creating your Summer Wardrobe
Choose lightweight fabrics – Cottons and cotton blends breathe more than other woven fabrics. When your body temperature rises, trapping heat and causing excess perspiration. Choosing breathable fabrics helps to reduce or eliminate this. Wearing a good anti-perspirant and staying well hydrated are two other ways to keep your clothes looking great in the heat.
Exercise in Summer
If you’re an athlete, you know there are specially made fitness clothes that can wick away moisture. Look for tags that identify these blends made by Reebok, Under Armour, Nike and other manufacturers. This material is also used in making jackets if you are exercising during cool mornings or evenings. If you’re not an athlete, or don’t plan on working out in the sun you can still take advantage of this type of clothing!
Choose light colors
Bright red or black may be some of your “skin enhancing” colors, but they’re also magnets for the suns’ rays. Instead try a cooler pink or turquoise. Lighter colors reflect more sun rays. In fact, wearing black and other dark colors make you to feel several degrees warmer the longer you are in the sun.
Go sleeveless – Whether you are at work or out for fun in the sun, going sleeveless is a great idea for women and men. For men, swap out your long sleeve button ups for their short-sleeve cousins. For women there are many sleeveless dresses and shirts that are cooler and still work appropriate. If you’re unsure a lightweight sweater or scarf can be worn on top.
Mix and Match
Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you have to pack away all of your clothes in exchange for a summer wardrobe. Many items are multifunctional. On summer evenings the temperature can still drop considerably and there’s bound to be a few rainy days. Keep a variety of options available and layer as needed. Remember you can always remove a layer but if you’ve gone out for the day in only a short sleeve top and then a thunderstorm suddenly blows in, you may be left out in the cold!
Don’t Forget the Feet
Flip flops seem to be the summer wardrobe shoe of choice. Opt to have a few different styles available such as a good walking shoe, a light weight walking sandal and flip flops for the pool or beach.
