If you have been keeping up with our family, you know my son’s last dentist appointment didn’t go so well. He had 3 teeth removed (one by accident) and 2 fillings. Our dentist also gave us a referral to an pediatric orthodontist to get braces. My other child has nearly perfect teeth so this came to quite a shock to me. At this point before I make my way to the orthodontist, I am familiarizing myself with various options so I feel better prepared for our upcoming appointment. One of topics of interest for me was researching Invisalign.
Invisalign is a clear braces alternative to metal braces that is virtually invisible and features removable aligners that gradually move teeth together over time. It is a more modern choice for orthodontic braces that are available to adults and teens. Having invisible braces is one reason why I am interested in Invisalgin but there are also other important benefits. My son can be lazy at times and is heavy into athletics. With Invisalign there are no food restrictions, maintaining dental brushing habits are easy and there is minimal interference with sports or other activities.
If you are like me, you have made an important decision without getting a second opinion. In the past I have bought expensive health insurance through my husband’s company only to find out that aside from having a high monthly premium we were also faced with an extremely high deductible. For my family that rarely gets sick, I had to make a quick decision to cancel only to find out I couldn’t cancel until the next open enrollment. It was an expensive mistake that I have not made again. I always ask for a second opinion for any big decision pertaining to my family or family expenses.
Getting braces is a costly decision to make. In a recent poll, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Invisalign, it was found that Americans are more likely to seek second opinion for a major car repair than for a medical procedure or straightening their teeth. For me, I need options and research & a good second opinion is key! Treatment like Invisalign can be a less expensive and more effective treatment for your loved one. I have had several friends who had children with metal braces at an early age. Their biggest complaint was that they did not get a second opinion from a different orthodontist that offered various (and more affordable) options. Since not all dentist or orthodontist are Invisalign providers, I was glad to find out that our referred orthodontist is a Invisalign provider by searching through the doctor locator.
Insigalign can help treat my son’s crooked back teeth but also other dental problems like widely spaced teeth, open bite, crossbite, overbite and underbite. It is important to be aware of other options for your family and getting a second opinion before you make any final decision. The outcome will result in a lifetime of beautiful smiles and is worth every well earned dollar. Visit the Invisalign website to learn about all of the dental issues Invisalign can treat.
To help bring awareness to the importance of a second opinion, Invisalign is giving away $50 a day in instant win prizes through Oct. 15 plus a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize in their Second Opinion Sweepstakes and Instant Win. Enter each day until you’re a winner!

Have you ever regretted not getting a second opinion?
Brittany C. says
I always wonder about getting second opinions if I’m not happy with the first, but I always seem to trust what the first doc says!

I say if you don’t feel comfortable, why not?

What a nice option for kids now over braces. I’m actually getting a second opinion soon and considering changing doctors:)

My son needs braces and it’s nice to know there’s other options. However, getting a second opinion as far as dental procedures never occurred to me.

I am not sure why but like the majority of people I don’t usually ask for a second opinion from the dentist. After reading this article I am inspired to be more pro-active in our oral health and health in general.

I’m a firm believer in getting second opinions if I feel it is needed. I’m very pro-active in my family and I health. Great post!

Good point and I have not got a second opinion in the past except the last time in regards to my husband’s teeth and the previous dentist was going to do a lot of unnecessary work so was glad I found someone else.

Our family dentist (he doesn’t do orthodontic work) tells me: This is what NEEDS to be done, this is what you should try to get done later, and this is we should do next. That gives me an idea of needs vs wants in terms on $$$. Glad you found someone else for your husband. It is very common especially with pediatric dentist and creates Sticker shock!

We did regular braces and they worked great for my daughters needs. I think that the invisalign is really cool though .

My husband is one of the top providers of Invisalign in the state. In his orthodontic practice, he does Invisalign on adults as well as Invisalign teen. I am a huge fan obviously!

I want braces for myself and my daughter is going to need braces soon. Invisalign sounds like a great option.

I think that braces and invisilign is just something that dentists push on people these days. My son has perfectly straight teeth. Two of them have a small gap and the dentist told me he will need braces because his teeth are off. Honestly, his teeth are really great! I have one daughter who has a big overbite, I am sure she legitimately will need braces. It makes me think that they are all about more dollars in their pocket than what we really need!

I’ve been dying to try this! I had braces as a kid but didn’t wear my retainer at all so a lot of my teeth moved back. Would be nice to have straight teeth again!
Jenn says
I had braces and I wish I had invisaline! I felt so self conscious when I had them!
Sierra Taienao says
I would love to get Invisalign braces! I had braces when I was younger but only on the top of my mouth and I am still not fully comfortable with my smile. I would love to get these one day and really think I will.

Interesting…I never know when to get a second opinion and probably wouldn’t have thought about it when it came to my teeth. Thank you for sharing this!

These look a lot more comfortable then the metal braces I had to wear back when with the rubber bands!! Those HURT!!!
Laurie - Steals and Deals for Kids says
I really love all the information that you provided on this subject! I have wondering about Invisalign braces for a while now…maybe one day I will take the plunge!!
Jenn says
Most of the time for anything I get a second opinion especially when it comes to my children. I am not looking forward to the day when we are faced with braces challenges! I would look into this for sure.
Sheila says
If there is one thing i would wish or kill to have, that would be the teeth, if only i could turn the time back then I would take care of my teeth, I heard so much good things about invisalign. everything cost money. anyway, so brave of your so to handle the pain, three teeth is not a joke.
Shanna says
I wanna try Invisalign so bad! My teeth are so crowded!
Pauchee Casimiro says
I have metal braces. I wish I knew about Invisalign, would have prefered it.
Stacie @ The Divine Miss Mommy says
I wish that I had gotten a second opinion when I wore braces. I had them for 4 years and I think that it could have been done in two. I need braces again now.
Natalie says
Will most likely do this for my daughter, I always wanted to get invisalign for myself..
Denise says
Thank you for the article , my smile deserves a 2nd opinion that’s for sure
Eileen Layno says
I could not say much about getting a second opinion for dental braces because my sister is an orthodontist and her husband is a dental surgeon. I trust their judgement. Two of my children had to wear those metal braces because of their crooked front teeth.
However, when it comes to other medical practitioners, I always go for second opinions.
Thanks for sharing.
