A Place at the Table Screening- Prytania Theatre

As a child, my single mother struggled to provide for my older brother & I. At the time my mother worked cleaning houses during the week and babysat at our local church on Sundays. On Saturday she also worked at the local Children’s Hospital providing childcare for special-needs children who had parents that worked at the hospital. We struggled to pay bills and to provide food on our table.

For a few years during my childhood my family depended on food stamps, received food from local charities and when my mother purchased food, it was peanut butter, mac & cheese from a box, beans and if we were lucky: chicken! My mother pushed through week after week in order to do what was necessary for our family. Because of this, hunger in America is so important to me and something I am very passionate about.

Next week New Orleans will be hosting a FREE screening for “A Place at the Table” next Tuesday evening at the Prytania Theatre at 7:30pm. This important documentary focuses on hunger in America and features information education, fighting obesity and ending hunger. Hunger affects millions and is closer to home than you think. If you are in the area, please attend the FREE screening at Prytania Theatre next week. I never knew “true hunger” but like some many, I was closer that I like to think.

Please visit their website for more information on the  Place at the Table screening and ways we can fight hunger in our own community.

About The Film
50 Million Americans—1 in 4 children—don’t know where their next meal is coming from. A Place at the Table tells the powerful stories of three such Americans, who maintain their dignity even as they struggle just to eat. In a riveting journey that will change forever how you think about the hungry, A Place at the Table shows how the issue could be solved forever, once the American public decides—as they have in the past—that ending hunger is in the best interests of us all.

This is very interesting, never heard of this movie being talked about so loud online. I’ve wanted to catch a real movie with a real impact on the people outside the states, people who have a twisted notion about the economy and real life situations of the Americans in the lower class.

Some of the kids at my daughter’s school are on the free lunch program due to financial need. Because of confidentiality issues, only a handful of people know which individuals these are. One of the administrators, championing the program, pointed out that for many kids this is the only meal they can count on each day. That thought saddens me greatly! I’m glad someone has taken the time to bring attention to such an important issue.
