My family and I love to camp especially during the cooler months. For us, aside from being mosquito-free, not being overheated is a major factor but bracing the elements is always challenging. One thing you should always do when planning an upcoming camping trip is prepare!
When you head out into the wild, the last thing you want to do is be ill-prepared. While some folks head out into the wilderness and pop up their campers, others like to go out and rough it a little bit. For those adventurous types that like to “live off the land” to some degree, what they bring along with them can be a matter of life and death. Here are six camping trip outdoor items you simply must have if you are going out into the woods to rough it:
Non-perishable foods – These are foods that are not going to spoil and you can easily munch on. Foods like jerky, granola and things of that nature are wonderful because they are packed with energy and will keep for longer periods than other foods. That leads us to…
Bear proof food containers – If you are hiking or camping in North America, you have to consider the possibility of bears. Bears are a part of daily life in the woods and you will eventually run into one if you spend a ton of time in the woods. That said, food will bring them in quickly. That can create all kinds of problems and dangers. With bear proof food containers that are on the market, you can mitigate that danger a great deal. Nothing is totally bear proof, but it will certainly minimize the chances of one catching your food scents.
Matches/Lighters – It goes without saying that being trapped out in the woods without fire would be a very bad thing. Fire is the one thing that allows us to cook food and boil water to make it safe. Having more than a few firestarting options is always a good thing and be sure to store them in a waterproof container.
Tarps – Unless you are carrying a high tech tent or even if you are, tarps are a necessity. They allow you to make shelter and create areas of dryness when the rain comes down. They are also invaluable when it comes to blocking wind and various other things that nature might throw your way.
Weather appropriate sleeping bags – A really good sleeping bag that is rated for the weather you are going to be in is a must. This is one step that can quite literally save your life out in the woods. A great sleeping bag will keep you warm and prevent all kinds of horrible things from happening to your body. Spend the money and get a really good sleeping bag.
Machete – If you are going to build shelter, hunt animals, walk through the forest or even simply camp in the local woods, a machete will come in handy. These knives are light and small enough to carry easily while still giving you the cutting power needed from most camping jobs. A good boot knife or hunting knife is also a good idea.
These are certainly not all the things you need for a great camping trip, but they are a really good start. The last thing you want is to be stuck out in the woods with no way to protect yourself or your family. These items will help a great deal towards that simply goal.
